About
Art is how I make myself understood. It is an exercise in seeking connection—both with myself and with others. Art helps me make sense of the world, reconcile the bad things that happen, and search for meaning amidst the madness of my internal dialogue.
Autobiographical in nature, my work explores themes of trauma, sex, motherhood, love, loss, abandonment, sexual assault, and the resulting mental health issues. It reflects the profound need to overcome, succeed, and live fully while holding hands with an ever-present fear due to past events.
Historically, my work has included short films, photography, sculpture, and drawing. In recent years, I have been drawn to painting, ink drawings, and writing.
My paintings tend to be large-scale nude self-portraits encompassing text. The oversized nature of the figures represents the sheer magnitude of the trauma held within the body. For the traumatised person, emotions can become so intense that they are difficult to contain. Nudity is an important component of the work; it speaks to the vulnerability of being completely honest with ourselves and others, seeking acceptance of who we are, including the parts we are ashamed of. While the images may be perceived by some as sexual in nature, the text reveals the true subject matter being explored.
Through this unwavering sharing of the truth, the aim is that others who have experienced similar traumas feel less alone.
